- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /// what had her life come to? that was the one thing that ran through the girls mind as she climbed through the window of her new bedroom, the cool autumn breeze hitting her skin as she entered the night air. her feet searched for the lower rooftop just below her as she lowered herself slowly until she felt the rough roofing titles. this was maybe the one thing she liked best about her new life in halifax- the roof of her house. ellie had a clean escape from her bedroom and could sit perched on her roof for hours if she pleased whenever she just needed to get away. she could also make an effortless escape outside the boundaries of her home by slipping down the large mulberry tree that grew just a few feet from her home – or just her current place of residence as ellie liked to think of it. she couldn’t even imagine growing up in this town. as far as she was concerned, nothing compared to los angeles, except maybe new york city. either way though, she had yet to accept the fact that halifax was now in fact her home – and at the rate she was going, she maybe never accept it. she missed her home, and her friends and everything they did. california was her home, it was where she fit in, she was everything she knew. elliot didn’t understand how her parents thought moving would be good for her – her brother had died, he was already taken from her, now they wanted to take everything else from her too? that made total sense – not. she didn’t like it here, not one bit – even though she had only been here for about two weeks now. she didn’t like the weather and so far she hadn’t met anyone that kept her amused long enough to even care about getting to know them. the only thing that was the same was the ocean and even that had an unfamiliar sense about it.
/// closing her window so it was just cracked, elliot turned and sat down, peering out at the ocean in front of her. she had to admit, the beach front home was nice but it still wasn’t enough to convince her to liking this place. laying back, keeping her knees bent, she let her ocean eyes wander over the star filled sky. it was almost eleven there which meant it wasn’t almost eight in california, which made her wonder what she might’ve been doing if she wasn’t stuck here in hell-ifax. maybe she’d be hitting up a party, or going to a bonfire or even having a movie night with her friends. whatever it was, it had to be better than being alone friday night. elliot’s thoughts soon drifted to her parents and just how much she hated them for moving her across the coutry. she was just getting used to ryan being gone and now they turned her world upside down. she could feel tension building her body at the thought but before she could switch the topic in her mind she heard a thud from the house over, which was just a few yards away or so. she laid there silently as she listened, soon hearing the sound of leaves rustling which caused her to finally sit up. ellie glanced around and soon realized it was the neighbor boy, who appeared to be sneaking out of his house. she smirked slightly to herself as leaned forward, crawling towards the edge of her roof to get a better look before sitting on her knees. it was kind of amusing, watching him and soon enough she felt the need to say something. “hey, do you mind? if you’re going to make that much noise you might as well just use the front door.” she pointed out, loud enough for him to hear, still keeping complete focus on him.

there was no difference between life and hell and it brought a slight smirk to landon romero's face as he thought about it. several months ago, he was enjoying life back in new jersey and now it was all coming to this? it wasn't even his fault the judge ruled it as his wrong doing so why was no one willing to believe him? one stupid, stupid mistake and he was shipped off to live with his father until his mom situated the whole mess - nice. landon was always a trouble maker but if there was one thing he knew not to do it was stealing a car. he was smarter than that, much better than the people that did do it; he wasn't planning on taking the risk of commiting that crime. so when the lights were seen flashing in his mirror, his first instinct was to run and he did just that. he ran and ran until he was being tackled by at least three police officers. he couldn't even look his mom in the face that night, she was so disappointed in him - but it was only a dare! if it wasn't for his friends, he'd be back at that party, minding his own business - besides, he had a car of his own, why bother taking someone else's ride? before he even knew what hit him, landon was being thrown into a case that was played out against his favor. apparently, his so-called friends were now turning against him and blaming him for every single thing that went down that night. while his case was being reviewed, his mother and attorney suggested it would be best if he took a nice vacation somewhere and took some time to himself - in translation that ment he was going to see his father. his father wasn't someone that intimidated him and he wasn't even a real father, he left landon and his mother when the boy was five and now, when it came to breaking the law, he wanted to play daddy? before this, the eighteen year-old had only seen his father once before, at the ceremony for his second - and current - marriage.
he couldn't remember the last time he even had an ounce of respect for his father - the man walked out on not only him, but his mom to marry another woman. and now he wanted to be the one to tell landon what to do and set all kinds of ground rules? don't think so. which was why landon was currently pushing his window open in hopes of making a successful getaway to see his summer fling and as he did so, he glanced up at the moon. same moon, two completely different places - one where he wished he was and the other, no so much. plotting his escape route in his head before swinging a leg out the window payne, landon listened carefully to double check again if his father was snoring in the next room over, which he was - and he wouldn't have to worry about his step-mom cause she worked the nightshift at the hospital as a doctor. back home, landon's bedroom was on the first floor which made sneaking out a lot easier. grabbing onto the payne and tossing his other leg over, landon shut the window as he jumped down onto the fence, careful not to make more noise that needed. walking along the top of the fence, a few leaves from the nearby tree crunched underneath his feet and fell to the ground below. he was lost in his thoughts - almost twenty minutes late to her house and he could already see the anger building up in her face - as a nearby voice caused him to jerk his body a bit and loose a bit of balance. awkwardly searching for the source of the voice, landon bent down on his knees as he let his voice break through the silence of the darkness and talk to the voice that spoke to him. it was a girl's voice, no doubt, and with that his eyes automatically lit up with joy. "sorry, stranger. i'm trying to make a great escape here and if you don't mind, your throwing off the suspense." landon began walking the fence once more until he reached the house next door and saw the brunette girl laying on the roof. he had seen her around a few times, coming in and out of the house, but he had never bothered to talk to her and now was his chance.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /// tugging on the sleves of her overside hoodie, elliot leaned forward on her knees and let her hands grip the edge as she peered down, watching the boy below. she could tell her had startled him by the way he seemed to be searching for her. it was actually kind of funny for a moment. from lack of having her own life at the moment, she wondered where he was going and why he was sneaking out. were his parents the straight-laced type that had a set curfew and all of that junk? or maybe he had gotten grounded and needed to break free? curiosity was coursing through her as she watched the boy finally come into complete view, his face illuminated by the moonlight. normally, elliot would be caught up in her own life and her own problems or whatever to even take interest in someone else she didn’t really care for. but since being in halifax, she had nothing better to do but wonder about the world going on around her. it was like she was trapped, taking away from everything that was once hers and placed into a totally different, parallel universe. keeping her focus on him, from what she could see, the boy standing on the ground below looked to be about her age and he had curly hair that fell just near his eyes. she had remembered seeing him the day they moved in, remembering how badly she just wanted to leave as she watched the movers move box after box. the boy hadn’t really caught her attention then, she just remembered watching him leave in a car. at least someone around here seemed to have a life of some sort. /// hearing his voice break into a response caused a small smirk to form on her lips as she cocked her head to the side just slightly, her naturally wavey hair moving with the movement. “great escape to where?” she scoffed at her words. so far nowhere in halifax was worth the effort of a great escape. “and, well, sorry, i didn’t know suspense was what we were aiming for here.” she added in a softer tone as she offered a somewhat small smile. she figured the boy would simply laugh at whatever she said and be on his way. after all, if there was anything exciting going around here, she wouldn’t be wasting her time talking to someone on a rooftop. just thinking of that made her realize how awkward this situation might be to anyone else, but at the same time, elllie didn’t care, what did she have to lose? a reputation? yeah right. in the back of her mind she began to wonder about him and his reputation. was he a goody good? by the way he just snuck out of his house she quickly crossed that off her list. maybe he was a jock. he kinda looked like he could pull off being on some kind of sports tream. maybe lacrosse or baseball. was he the party boy? very possible. realizing the silence growing between them as she escaped her thoughts, she cleared her throat nonchalantly before speaking up once more “well mr great escape, don’t let me stop you.” she said as she lifted one hand in a slight wave, before slowly moving back, out of his view.

landon had remembered seeing the girl moving into the house but never really stopped to introduce himself or talk to her - he had always been coming and going and not really home since he was trying his best to stay busy and away from his father. the moonlight was his only source of light and following the path, he grasped onto her roof and pulled himself up, finally seeing where the voice had came from. it didn't surprise him that she was there, he had caught glimpses of her the previous nights and days but this was his first time using this escape route. "anywhere but home." he said, with a tone that gave her the hint that he wasn't pleased with staying at home all night. this was the first time he had even looked in her direction, other times he was hopping in cars and driving off down the street - never once thinking she'd might like to join in on his fun. the girl didn't look depressed - so why was sitting on a rooftop much more exciting than exploring halifax, even though there wasn't much to explore? running a hand through his curls, in one swift movement he leaped from his standing position on the dividing fence onto her roof beside her. he was already twenty minutes late, what was another twenty going to do? landon - a huge flirt back in jersey - was always keeping his eyes open for any girl within arms reach and since she was the new girl, he figured he might as well talk to her for a little while longer, and on the brightside she wasn't bad to look at either. he laughed a bit as she commented back on the suspense part; that wasn't really what he was aiming for exactly but it helped knowing that he was successfully out of the house with his father still fast asleep without knowing his son's whereabouts.
from his perspective, the girl looked kind of misplaced in halifax - she had the california tan that would soon fade out thanks to halifax's climate, not that it wasn't sunny here; her natural highlights were peaking throughout her hair color; and she had that california girl vibe to her; she had california written all over her, but then again he was just guessing. he softly let out a smirk as he twirled a curl of his around his index finger and gazed up at the sky, not really finding it odd that he was sitting beside someone he just met and trying to make friends with her. "there's got to be something out there for you to do besides sitting on a rooftop alone, on a friday night." he was already trying to smooth talk his way towards her but at the same time, trying to make a new friend. if he was going to be stuck with his dad for however long, might as well make friends with the cute neighbor, right? the thought of his summer fling lingering in the back of his mind and how pissed she must be by now slowly disappeared and was replaced with thoughts of the girl sitting beside him. leaning back on his palms as he extended his arms back, he looked at the tree in the front of her house. one of the few times when he came to visit his dad, the previous owners had a tire swing attached and he could still make out the holes from the rope carved into the tree as he sat ontop of the roof. glancing over at the brunette, he could see her watching him with her ocean eyes. "landon romero. the official bad boy next door." pausing as he searched for words to say next, he spoke up. "i'm just guessing here, but i hope your not going to announce you're a porn star. or a murderer." seeing the dead expression on her face, he continued on. "you know, like the movie, girl next door?" he was searching for any kind of amusement and a smile crept across his face as he say the lightbulb click. soon after, he felt her soft punch connect with his shoulder.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /// anywhere but home. that sounded like a nice place to the brunette girl at that moment. she’d much rather be anywhere in the world than in halifax and once again she felt the feeling of hate towards her parents for bringing her here. a new school, a new house, a new everything. it was change that she wasn’t ready for and she wasn’t sure if she’d ever really accept it. the way the words rolled off his tongue made her wonder about his own home life as she sat back. in the back of her mind endless scenarios played out, curious as to what could be so bad in his life. did he get along with his parents? or maybe he just simply didn’t like being home and craved adventure. hearing a thump on the roof next to her caused her curiosity to quickly wash away as she turned only to find that the boy had made his way next to her. she eyed the boy as a half-smile appeared on her lips, although she was a bit taken off guard. ellie could finally get a good look at him, erasing the images of the quick glances she had taken before from her head. he definitely didn’t lack when it came to looks and it appeared that the boy had some sense of style and once again she was caught up in her thoughts. where did the boy plan on going? maybe he was sneaking out to see his girlfriend? she figured with looks like that he was probably mr ladies man. and with that though, elliot began to wonder about alterative motives. she was the new girl, a new face, something different and he probably thought it was perfect opportunity to get close – she wasn’t stupid. after all, he had just been in a rush to leave, now he wanted to come be her rooftop buddy?
/// elliot would take what she could get though. she needed some kind of social life and why not start with the neighbor boy? turning her head away from him as he took a seat next to her, looking straightforward, she lightly chuckled and shook her head at his words. “it’s not so bad. gives me time to plan my own great escape” she said sarcastically, although she had contemplated running away to california more than once since she had been here. ”and i guess that means you got something better to do than to sit here, a rooftop with the neighbor girl, right?” she shot back at him sarcastically as she pulled her knees close to her, letting her arms cross over them while she lowered her head, allowing it to rest on them. listening to his introduction caused her to laugh just a bit as she buried her head in her arms for just a second before lifting it, glancing in his general direction. “bad boy huh? good to know.” she said as just before he began speaking again. his words caught her by surprise as her giddy expression slowly faded. her brow raised before the light bulb clicked as he began explaining. she shook her head with a smile at his lame attempt at a joke as her fist hit his arm in a light, playful punch. “none of the above, sorrrry.” she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders.”im elliot, but people call me ellie. official guard dog.” a light chuckle escaped her lips at her own lame joke as she uncrossed her arms before leaning back on her palms, her eyes scanning over the sky once more. “so, shouldn’t you be going somewhere? i mean, i doubt you plan on sitting up here after you just completed that big escape.” she joked, keeping her sights set on the sky.

at this point, landon could careless about his friends that were probably wondering where he was right about now - at least he was out of the house, although not too far and still too close for comfort. if he had made the escape sucessfully, he'd already be causing trouble with his friends - something neither of his parents wanted him to do. getting pass lorraine was a miracle all by itself - she was the only person that truly cared for landon, without having second motives attached. if it wasn't for her, he probably would have already snapped at his father by now and started something where the police had to get involved - it wouldn't be the first time. when his father came to jersey for his junior prom, landon nearly flipped a lid - and it was lo that calmed him down and stopped him from doing something irrational. but then again, there was always a second time for everything and at his dad's second marriage, landon started yet another war and ending up leaving the ceremony earlier. he had a lot of anger towards his father for multiple reasons so it wasn't pretty shocking that sitting on the girl next door's rooftop was somewhat relaxing and away from his father. as he rested his arms ontop of his knees, he turned to face the girl and noticed that this was the first time he really got to see how pretty she was. he had seen her a couple times, but even then he didn't pay too much attention. he was always so wrapped up in what he was doing and not who she was. even though he had prior commitments already, he was planning on staying up on this rooftop for as long as she was - there was nothing like meeting a new girl and getting on her good side, he thought. if she was going to be on her rooftop every night, landon assumed she needed company - someone to hang out with while both of them complained about their parents - and landon had just decided he'd make it a daily chore of seeing ellie.
turning his attention toward her as his thoughts were cleared, he let out a small smile as he spoke up once more. "own great escape to nowhere right? so far, you've done nothing but sit here." he said, slightly letting out a laugh as he turned his head to focus on the tree in her yard. "if i had something better to do, you'd know it." he muttered before stealing a quick glance in her direction. truly, landon had nothing planned but a house party to go to - how fun was that? it was almost eleven and he was heading to a house party? some kind of fun. back home in jersey, the girls were all over landon so it only made sense that he matured into a flirt. if there was one thing he was determined to do before he got out of this hell hole, it was to spend as much time with ellie as much as possible. "i think i'll just call you ellie." he smirking but hesitating as well - he had never met a girl named elliot, but it seemed to fit her in a way. "so now your trying to get rid of me? first, you practically beg me to come sit with you, and now all the sudden you're too cool to sit on a rooftop with me? fail." joking, he softly titled in her direction, nudging shoulders with her as he smiled. "besides, i think my new favorite hobby is hanging on your rooftop." in case she hadn't noticed already, landon was a smooth talker. if he was going to be stuck living with his father until his mom decided the appropriate time for him to return home, he was going to spend an awful amount of time with ellie - and suddenly, he was beginning to forget why he even snuck out of the house in the first place, what girl was it? ellie had a way of making him forget everything - or everyone - else and it was only the first night of their many, many adventures, he foreshadowed.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /// elliot raised a brow at the boys words as she finally looked in his direction. “what, do you watch me through your window? weirdo.” she teased but also kept a hint of seriousness in her voice. “its not like i have a life here. so far this place sucks.” she added on, her words coming out sounding a bit more bitter than she intended. It was just her true feelings so – so far she hated halifax and she wanted california back. she missed her home, her friends, the places, everything. besides that, california was written all over her. it was in the way she talked, her style, it was just her. she didn’t fit in with these kids around here, or at least that’s how she felt this far along. hearing him claim that if he had something better to do she’d know about it caused a light chuckle to escape her lips as she turned her head away from him once more. “im pretty sure I wouldn’t know about it.” she was beginning to wonder if there was anything worth doing in this crappy town. if there was, she sure as hell hadn’t come across it. “ellie it is!” she said with sarcastic enthusiasm, keeping her sights set on the scenery in front of her. elliot was usually good at reading people but so far, she wasn’t sure of what to think of this boy sitting beside her, which almost intrigued her.
/// hearing him tease about her ‘begging’ for him to come up caused her to sharply turn her head in his direction, one brow raising as she gave off a look, almost as saying ‘excuse me’. although she didn’t have him all figured out, she could tell he was a smooth talker and that wasn’t her thing. she probably looked like some lonely girl to him, someone he thought he could easily wrap around his finger. and well, if that was the case, he had the wrong girl. “begging? is that what you called begging? you were climbing out your window. i amused myself for about three seconds, then you invited yourself up here.” she corrected him with a slight smirk, leaving an illusion as to if she was joking or not as she softly swayed to the side after his shoulder nudge her. “oh really, new hobby? and why would that be?” she questioned with a devious smirk as she rested her chin on her shoulder, keeping her eyes set on him. “let me guess..” ellie began speaking as she shook her head just slightly, letting her hair fall away from her eyes. “you’re thinking, ooh, the new girl talked to me, new girl’s alone, ooh, lets try and get close to the new girl. blah blah blah and so on and so forth.” she explained, figuring he got the drift. “yeah?” she asked, with a sweet smile as she fluttered her eye lashes, looking at him once more.
